Joe Martin is a 21st-century troubadour whose rich, resonant voice, timeless songwriting, and heartfelt storytelling have earned him growing attention on both sides of the Atlantic. 

Performing across the UK, Europe, and at legendary venues in Nashville, Tennessee, Martin has built a reputation as one of the UK’s finest modern troubadours, blending classic Americana influences with his own distinctive style and sensibility.  Deeply rooted in the classic American tradition, Joe’s sound draws from a wide range of folk, country, and singer-songwriter influences. Artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Townes Van Zandt, Jason Isbell, Kacey Musgraves, The Civil Wars, Chris Stapleton, Colter Wall, Brent Cobb, and the wider world of Dave Cobb-produced Americana have all helped shape his musical direction. At the heart of his work is a dedication to storytelling, lyric, melody, and emotional honesty.  Joe’s love of country music was sparked in 2013 after being heavily influenced by the television show Nashville. He was especially drawn to the storytelling tradition at the centre of the genre, a discovery that would later shape his own songwriting path. In 2017, that journey came full circle when he performed at the world-famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee. Just a week before his Bluebird debut, Joe met and received advice from one of his songwriting idols, John Paul White of The Civil Wars — an inspirational moment that helped mark a defining chapter in his musical career.  His time in Nashville has also seen him collaborate with some of the city’s most respected songwriters and musicians, including Johnny Garcia of Garth Brooks’ band, hit songwriter Jill Colucci, and Aaron Raitiere. One particularly humbling moment came when Joe was invited to co-write with Raitiere at RCA Studios on Music Row and was given a personal tour of RCA’s historic Studio A — a room where legends including The Beach Boys, Dolly Parton, and George Strait have made history.  

Joe released his debut EP, Small World, in 2017 to much acclaim, before going on to release a suite of singles with The Champs of the much-respected UK Americana band Danny and the Champions of the World. In 2021, he released Bound For Lonesome, an EP made up of songs written during his 2018 trip to Nashville. He then went on to record and release the live album The First Five Years, capturing the early chapter of his career and the development of his sound as a live performer.  In 2023, Joe released his debut album, Empty Passenger Seat, followed by an extensive tour across the UK and Europe. The album further established him as a compelling songwriter with a gift for crafting vivid, melodic, and emotionally resonant songs. 

 

His latest album, Alone In Valentine, features a body of work carefully crafted over several years and was recorded over seven days in Nashville, Tennessee, with Cal Campbell and Cornelius Webb — sons of the much-loved music legends Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb. Made in the spirit of the golden years of Country and Americana, the album brought together top Nashville session players in one room. Arrangements created on the fly, helped capture performances that on the finished record, make the music feel real and alive. For Joe, working alongside Cal Campbell and Cornelius Webb was a dream come true. Their connection to such a rich musical heritage helped create an album that Joe describes as a “musical bridge between generations.” Alone In Valentine aims to create something both new and timeless — pushing boundaries while preserving the very best of classic country music. 

 

Joe Martin’s work has received praise from critics and respected publications alike. RnR Magazine wrote, “Joe Martin brings his own style and sensibilities to an album that can stand foursquare with anything from the other side of the pond,” while Fatea Magazine praised his “superb melodies accompanied by a fantastic voice and outstanding lyrics.” After seeing Joe perform at the Bluebird Cafe, Jeremy Egner of The New York Times observed: “The night I was at the Bluebird Cafe a young Englishman with a rich, resonant voice named Joe Martin seemed primed for bigger things.” W21 described him simply as “The UK’s finest troubadour.”  With a growing international profile, a deep connection to Nashville’s songwriting heritage, and a catalogue defined by honesty, melody, and lyrical craft, Joe Martin continues to carry the troubadour tradition forward — bridging generations, genres, and continents through songs that feel both classic and unmistakably his own.
